The Board ...
"Keeps & Moats Chess" uses a unique game board, designed to be used for a number of up-coming games. This section describes the different areas on the board, and how they effect the rules of this game.
Battlefield: In the center of the board is a 9-by-9 section of alternating dark and light green squares. This is the common area of the board where the majority of the action in the game will take place.
Moats: Centered on each edge of the Battlefield is the Moat — a row of 7 alternating dark and light blue squares. The Moat provide an extra layer of defense, keeping enemy pieces from entering the Keep too quickly.
Special "Moats Rule": A sliding piece (Queen, Bishop, or Rook) can only enter an enemy's Keep if it starts the turn on that enemy's Moat. The Moat puts no movement restriction on entering friendly Keeps, or when exiting any Keep.
Keeps: Centered on the outside of each Moat is a Keep — a 3-tier pyramid of alternating light and dark grey squares. The center square of the Keep is called the Throne and is marked in the color of the Kingdom that starts there. (See the Pieces section for details on how the pieces are setup at the start of the game.)
Dungeons: When the major pieces (non-Pawns) are captured, they are removed from the board and held in the Dungeon of the Kingdom that captured them. The Dungeons are the large colored triangles set just to the right-hand side of each Keep.
If a Pawn is able to get into an enemy's Keep, it has an option of being traded for one of the pieces held in that Kingdom's Dungeon. (See the Pieces section for the full range of options available to a Pawn that makes it into an enemy's Keep.)
